Moving is one of the most expensive situations of the year. Deposit, first month’s rent, agency fee, transport, and once you arrive you realize your new place is empty. A full move can pass €5,000 if you buy everything new. Luckily, you don’t have to.
Here’s the practical guide to setting up a full apartment with the bare minimum spent, step by step.
Before you move: plan
Make a list of what you need, divided into three levels:
- First day essentials: mattress, sheets, pot, plate, glass, lamp.
- First week: table, chairs, microwave, sofa, shelves.
- First month: decor, mirrors, plants, extra lamps.
Start with the first-day list. Everything else can wait.
Where to find it all (without buying)
1. Neighbor donation apps Givore is the fastest option. Set your new address, choose a radius (500 m, 5 km), and see what’s available. Many people are giving away furniture because they’re also moving.
2. Move in your new building Ask the doorman or the neighbor on the fourth floor. There’s almost always someone who just moved or just cleared out a relative’s place. The most underrated method.
3. Family and personal network Before buying anything, send a message to your family group and 5-6 close friends: “I’m setting up an apartment, does anyone have X?” 70% of the time, the answer is yes.
4. Markets and rastros For what you don’t find on apps. At the rastros in Madrid, Valencia, or Barcelona you can find solid furniture for €10-30. Get there early and bring cash.
5. Municipal recycling centers Some cities run reuse programs where you can pick up furniture before it gets destroyed. Ask at your local one.
Strategy: order matters
Week 1: bed, table, chairs, basic lighting. Week 2: sofa, shelves, small appliances. Month 1: decor, plants, accessories.
Don’t try to set everything up in 48 hours. Living with the bare minimum for 2-3 weeks helps you understand what you actually need.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying furniture online on moving day. Tiredness makes you overspend.
- Taking furniture without measuring. Always carry a tape measure.
- Skipping the cleaning. Wash bedding, cushions, and all textiles at 60°C before using.
How much you save
A standard move equipped secondhand costs €200-600 (transport, deposits, and essential basics). The same with everything new: €4,500-7,000. The difference is real, and the final quality doesn’t show.
Bonus: the apartment has character. A mix of furniture, stories, neighbors. Much more interesting than a catalog room.
