New furniture costs a fortune. Yet, in pretty much every city, people give away sofas, tables, shelves, and wardrobes every single day. You just need to know where to look.
1. Neighbor Donation Apps
The easiest route. On Givore, set your location, pick a radius (500 meters, 5 km, whatever), and see what your neighborhood is giving away right now. Free, usually picked up the same day.
2. Moves and Evictions
When someone moves out, furniture is the first thing to go. September and June are the best months (student housing turnover and job relocations). If you live near a university area, pay attention in late June.
3. Local WhatsApp Groups
They exist, but spots are usually limited and old members almost never leave, so getting in can be tough. Don’t spend much time trying.
4. Municipal Recycling Centers
Some cities run reuse programs where you can pick up furniture before it gets destroyed. Ask at your local recycling center.
5. Flea Markets and Rastros
Not free, but the cheapest option after donation apps. At Madrid’s Rastro, Barcelona’s Encants, or Valencia’s Cabanyal you can find solid furniture for €10-30. Get there early and bring cash.
Practical tip: always carry a tape measure and measure before promising to take something. The classic mistake is saying yes to a sofa that doesn’t fit through the door.
The best part? The fewer new pieces of furniture we buy, the less demand for logging, transport, and packaging. Secondhand furniture lasts exactly as long as new furniture does.
