Dumping a sofa on the streets of Madrid isn’t just bad form, it’s illegal. Madrid’s Public Cleaning, Waste Management and Circular Economy Ordinance explicitly bans leaving furniture in public spaces, and fines can reach €3,000. Good news: getting rid of it legally is free. You have two options.

Option 1: Pickup by appointment

The city comes to your building entrance within 3 days max. Request it via:

  • Madrid Móvil app
  • Notification website
  • Phone 010 (or 914 800 010 from outside Madrid)
  • In person at any Citizen Service Office

You’ll need to provide a phone number for coordination. One request per week.

Option 2: Scheduled district pickup

Each district has a fixed day of the month when crews collect furniture without needing an appointment. Rules:

  • Put furniture out between 21:00 and 23:00 on your assigned day.
  • Leave it on the sidewalk next to the nearest waste container.
  • Don’t block pedestrian traffic.

Check your street’s day on the official scheduled pickup map of the Madrid City Council.

Recycling centers

If you want to drop them off sooner, Madrid has 16 fixed recycling centers (puntos limpios) and several mobile ones. Free entry with ID.

Before tossing it, consider this

A lot of furniture that ends up in dumpsters is perfectly fine. Before calling 010, post it on Givore: upload a photo, someone from the neighborhood comes to pick it up for free, and you skip the wait. I’ve seen entire apartments cleared out this way in 48 hours.

Quick summary

  • Dumping on the street = fine up to €3,000.
  • Pickup by appointment = free, 3-day wait.
  • Scheduled pickup = free, depends on your district.
  • Givore = fastest, and useful to someone else.
